Narrative : David Hockney and ideas
My Shoot Ideas
I am going to do my shoots inspired by these photographs. I am going to do this by taking a picture of the same place outside over a day, and then put it all together and align it in Photoshop. Once I have done place, I will do their same somewhere else to compare what the sky is like on different days and different places. The photograph I like the most is the top right photograph. I like this one the most because it has people involved. It also tells a story throughout the day and makes the viewer wonder what they have been doing throughout the day. to make this photograph theme successful I need to take the photograph in the same position each time, this is so that each photograph looks correct and positioned correctly. The bottom middle is different to all the other, this is because it is less obvious to see that it is a lot of photographs put into a joiner form. The photograph I like the least is the middle photograph, this is because it seems quite boring compared to the others. Also where the photograph was taken was quite a simple and bland setting.
Experimental Shoot
This is my experimental shoot for the narrative project. This is just a picture of my room however the photographs are layered into a collage to form the whole picture. The photograph is created by 6 different photographs taken at different angles so you can see different parts of the room in a different way. This is not how I am going to create my photos because it may not work for what I am trying to create. This was not inspired by a certain photographer however was created after looking at David Hockney's work. His work was made in a joiner form (some) because he didn't feel as thought normal photographs had a good representation of time. so he decided to create a sequence of photographs. This photograph is a sequence of photos however they have been put altogether into a joiner. My ideas for my next shoot is to put the photos into a joiner however they wont be layered, just side by side.
This is an example of a joiner or collage made by Mark Murfitt. This has been made by him taking photographs from several different angles. I think he chose to stand in that certain space for a reason. This is because, from where he was standing and taking the photograph, the bridge wasn't right in the middle but on the left a little bit. This makes the photograph more interesting to look at. Also it isn't just a photograph of the bridge but walkers by as well which creates a story of what those people could be doing.
shoot ideas/plans
I feel like it would be interesting for the person looking at the photograph if it told a story over the day or over a long period of time. For example I could do the life of a tree over a long period of time (summer to winter) because it does tell a story and does make the viewer think about why? what is the point in this photograph? why has the photographer done this? it does give more depth to the photograph just as David Hockney tried to do. Examples of his work does represent time such as the sky over the day, from the sun rising to going down.
Even though this is a painting of the sky created by David Hockney, I feel as though it does still have the same idea that I am attempting to create. The fact that it has so many different colours all in one painting does represent to me the "Day in the life" of the sky. With my photographs I am going to keep my camera in one place throughout the day and then take a photograph every hour. After I have collected all the photographs and picked the ones out that I feel represent best the story I am trying to create, I will put it into a joiner format.
First shoot : plan and critique
analysis and critique : This is my attempt at my photography working on the sunset idea. I feel as though I could improve it a lot. I like how you can clearly see how the sky has changed from light to dark and you can see the sunset appearing throughout the day. However I now regret the bottom photograph because I took it expecting it to end up lighter then it was, I think it makes the whole photograph lose the meaning of what its supposed to be a little bit because it makes it look messy. This is because you have to look really closely to be able to see what it is. I think it would look better if each photograph was aligned side by side.
Second shoot : plan and critique
analysis and critique : I feel like this second shoot is better than first because It is easier to understand and look at. The first shoot was a little messy. On my next shoot I am going to make sure they align more because with these photographs I still don't feel like they line up properly. I think the first two are not as interesting as they could be and I need to try and make it less blurry. Next time I will try and keep the camera at the same angles and distance each time so that it is much easier to align them together each time.
Third shoot : plan and critique
analysis and critique : I feel like I have improved on my last shoot. I feel like I have also improved on my critique on last time, in the photograph joiner. All the separate photographs lined up together which made it look more professional then the previous ones I have made. What I don't like about this shoot as much as the others is the clouds. To improve I could take the photographs on a sunnier day so that it looks more interesting and more appealing to look at. The clouds also make the whole joiner look blurry. Another criticism is that the last to photographs are not as staggered as the others.
Layering photograph technique
these photographs above were my first two drafts at trying the process of layering two or more photographs together (weaving). My second draft is on the left and my first draft is on the right. I like this process because you are able to incorporate different photographs and make it into one thing. In the first draft I decided to make each weave quite large so that you were able to easily see it was a different photograph. In the second draft I tried to make the photograph as a whole look as though it is just one photograph. I prefer my second draft because it is easier and less complex to look at than the first.
shoot 4 - inspired by Qi Wei Fong
analysis and critique : In my first 2 shoots of 'the day in the life of the sky', the joiner had various photographs throughout one day. in this shoot, it is photographs taken over several days of the sunset at the same time each night. I think what went well about this piece of work is that it relates to my previous shoots on the sky and sunsets. To improve this photograph I think I should make sure each photograph joins up to each other accurately.
shoot 5
analysis and critique : this is another joiner, I took these photographs from a slow motion video that I did of my dogs. The photographs show a sequence of Events where my dad throws a stick and the dogs go to get it. I like these photographs because you can show the end where the dog actually does get the stick that was thrown. To improve this I am going to try and relate to my previous shoots of the sunset. I will be going out later at night and doing the same thing in a field so that you can see the sunset behind.

Duane Michals
Chance Meeting
About Duane Michals : was born February 18, 1932 and he is an American photographer. His work is mainly around narrative/innovative sequencing. His mot known pieces of work include - Sequences, The journey of the spirit after death, Chance meeting; photographs.
This photograph - (chance meeting) was made in 1972. This photograph - like other photographs he has taken - focuses on gender. Helps show the exploration of gay rights and the struggles of having to hide someones sexual orientation. This photograph takes place over six separate photographs. By the end of the photographs, both men had looked at each other once they had walked by, but at different moments. Usually you don't look at someone once they have walked past however the fact that they both turned around to look at each other suggests that there was something interesting that they needed to look at another time before they left. They could have wanted to speak to each other but felt as though they couldn't at that time due to the right system. The two men don't seem to know each other, who are walking past in a little ally. The photograph makes the viewer wonder where they are going and why they needed to look back at each other.

Peer Critique For Narrative Project
WWW : You have a lot of content and have a wide range of techniques. You have a clear theme of sunsets.
EBI : To improve you could join some of your photos up more accurately.
WWW : You added many effects into your photographs. You described your photos.
EBI : To improve you could link your photographs to a theme.

Next Steps
To improve my work even further during this project I need to relate my next photography narrative piece to dogs and the sunset so that I am able to show the relation between each photography 'joiner' I take.
shoot 6
Analysis and critique : This is shoot 6 for my "day in the life" project. i like the colours in this shoot however if I was doing this shoot again there would be room for improvement. I think the colours in each photograph are creative and interesting to look at, this is because I chose the photographs from a load of photographs I took throughout that day, so that I picked the ones that are most unique and visually attractive to someone looking at it (viewer). Although I feel like the photographs I chose were nice to look at, I feel as the place I could have taken them could have made the overall joiner look better if it was in a place of more interest and background.
